# Test gateway

The test gateway exists only in sandbox. It needs no credentials and never contacts a real processor: each answer comes from the card number, using the [test card list](/testing).

- Ordinary test cards are approved, with an authorization code, AVS `Y` when a postal code was sent and CVV `M` when a security code was sent.
- Decline cards are declined with their documented code.
- Cards marked "capture fails" or "refund fails" succeed first and fail on the later step.
- The security code `000` is always incorrect, and a past expiry date is always declined as expired.
- Captures, voids and refunds only work on transactions the test gateway made.
- A [3-D Secure result](/payments/3d-secure) is recorded with `forwarded` set to `true` and never changes the answer.

Surcharging works on the test gateway as on NMI or Authorize.net: OrderCard adds the rate you set on the gateway.
